Fellow animal right activists-let’s put an end to this!

http://uaepixs.blogspot.com/2009/08/please-dont-keep-them-in-captivity.html
Zoos are no longer needed and to end them people need to understand all the harm they cause. Although zoos definitely conserve in some ways as well as educate, the good they bring does not come close to the bad they cause. To end this we need to change the mind set of all the people who believe these animals for some reason don’t have rights. We need to show them the data that proves that captive base breeding in legitimate reserves are the way to conserve this source of beautiful wildlife and not incest used in zoo based breeding. Help me to try and make a difference.

Who says animals don’t have rights…

Most people would say this six
week old puppy has emotions.
Do you have a pet? If so what’s its name what does it like? When most people talk about their animals they would use human emotions to explain them to a friend. It is called anthropomorphizing to give animals human emotions; most of us would believe our pets can feel sadness, anger, or happiness. Why is it that zoo animals are perceived to not have any of these emotions. What is truly the big difference between a house held dog and a zoo captive wolf?  With my personal experience there is not much difference at all. Therefore we do not have the right to say that some animals have emotions while some do not. These animals that are forced to be kept in a zoo can still feel emotions and just like you and me do not want to sit in a cage their whole life. It is actually a common practice for zoo’s to administer antidepressant drugs to their animals especially those that develop ARD “Abnormal Repetitive Disorder.” The leopard at the zoo I previously worked at would pace up and down his cage for days at a time and to make matters worss during a storm last winter half of his cage got destroyed. I was working there that summer and the cage had still not been redone, leaving this active leopard in a completely too small of a cage for his size, forcing him to go through ARD.
Then why is it that this Bush
Baby does not?

We create zoos and by doing this have created more problems that we need to fix. As a whole they are unneeded and should be banned.

Conservation is key

As a wildlife conservationist myself I am completely for the conservations methods that most zoos attempt to install. However the problem is that zoo based conservation has proven to be not nearly as productive as captive breeding conservation.  Believe it or not but many zoo animals have been found to have incest. Genetic variation is extremely important in species especially when trying to bring back a species from being endangered.

Conservation is the number one reason most zoo keepers will say why zoos exist, however true conservation also conserves the habitat that these animals are native to. Without conserving the habitat as well as the animal itself the animal will not be able to prosper once it is released back into the wild. I would never say that zoos do not conserve because sometimes they can bring huge conservation method but there are better ways and conserving these animals, to keep them locked up is not a method of conservation in my opinion. The zoo I previously worked at had no method of conservation at all and many times small zoos do not have any means of conservation. Although most of the larger well known zoos do try and conserve, many do not have the money or methods to help in the conservation effort.

Zoos are not needed it our technologically advanced lifestyle…

Don’t get me wrong I think it is a wonderful idea to educate kids on wild animals however zoos are not the way to accomplish this goal.

anthropomorphism-baby-kinkajou

Today kids are walking around with smartphones where they can look up in two seconds how fast a cheetah can run, they do not need to go to a zoo to see what a kinkajou looks like. However zoos still exist to educate children when technology is a more superior source of education.

This is me with one of my personal favorites at the
zoo. However I would not trust her if she was in fact
wild. She is a grey wolf that has been domesticated
so much I trusted sleeping with her.

I’m sure most people have heard of programs such as “Plant Earth” or “Life” which I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about the animals that live on our amazing planet. By watching these programs people can learn more about wild animals then spending a whole week at a zoo. The animals in zoos are to somewhat domesticated, while the animals you watch on these programs are truly wild and by watching them in their natural habitat your kids and students will learn the    true way of life of these animals.

These animals are beautiful and majestic when it comes to a small little bush baby to a roaming lion, being submissive to humans takes all their dignity away. A research survey analyzed how people have a more negative outlook on animals after visiting zoos then before. People grow up fearing and therefore respecting these wild animals but after seeing them stuck in a zoo in inadequate sized enclosures; kids no longer fear or treat these animals with the respect they so rightfully deserve. This is a problem that parents raising their children need to be aware of and make an effort to stop this negative outlook.

For all you animal lovers…

Have you ever been to zoo, yes I am talking about the place where most people share fabulous childhood memories? I have, and even worked as a zoo keeper myself. However after working there and going to my numerous wildlife conservation classes I have acquired a completely new outlook on zoos.

When you walk into a zoo the first thing most people do is run to all the eye catching exhibits but did you know that on average a person only stays at each exhibit for six and a half seconds . When families go to visit, it usually will take about half a day but most people do not realize that their half a day exertion results in a lifetime imprisonment for these wild animals. Not to mention most childrens reaction when they see these animals is too yell and mimic these animals sounds. It was one of my least favorite parts of working in the wolf exhibit and seeing the little kids scare my favorite wolf by woofing at her so she would run away. Its was the worst to see these poor animal be subject to this type of treatment.

Wild animals are supposed to be just that “wild” not kept in unnecessary zoos for human entertainment.
